Behind the Scenes

The Making of GoT

The making of Game of Thrones is so amazing. From building the sets to casting characters for the background, Game of Thrones goes through a lot for just one episode. The casting process for this show had to be very precise. The hardest part for them were finding good children actors to play the Stark kids. It was also fascinating to see all the jobs that people have on their team. One that really caught my eye was their Northern Ireland Location Manager. I think his job is so important on this team because he needs to find the perfect places that represent the world of GoT and it also has to be generous in case they need to build. Most of the building is in the studio with the green screen and special effects but I found the Winterfell set the best. This set was modeled after Northern Europe and has like a Scandinavian feel. The architecture itself is much rougher, dark, and rustic. This set they really wanted to make the actors feel like they were really in an old medieval like castle.

Another huge part of Game of Thrones was the visual effects. It was so amazing to see the scenes without the edited in tents or castles by the coast. It really just blew my mind to see what these people add to the show itself. One job on set really surprised me, the animal wrangler. He has to train the dogs and the ravens which to me would seem impossible. It was really funny to me when they said they couldn't have a sandwich or some food when the ravens are on set because they'll fly over and take it.

The show itself is based off of the books by George R.R. Martin and it's so cool to see it come to life on screen the way he wants it. To make his dream come alive before his eyes and ours was incredible. I don't think many book and movie combos work together that often, they just usually steal the title and make it for Hollywood. I feel though with Game of Thrones that George is so involved with the cast and production team that really you see the books coming alive through all these people. Even in the interviews the cast stated that they would read the book and already be ready for the scene and even wonder what the setting would look like.

To be able to be on this set would be super exciting but I would love to work on any film set. To get to experience a days work that goes into filming a tv show or movie would be a dream to me. I always wanted to be a camera operator of some sort or a Director of photography and compose the shots. I think though if I had a chance I would most likely do whatever they wanted me to. To work on Game of Thrones through would really be my dream. It's really insane how they turn a small film set into this big world that captivates you.
